Strong Roots...New Growth Capital Campaign

The Alano Club, the premier year-round facility providing support for those in recovery from the diseases of alcoholism and drug addiction, is a wise and valuable investment for those who care about healing and recovery within our community.

Teenagers, singles, couples, grandparents, the well-established and the homeless, the employed and the jobless, those referred by the court system, and graduates from other programs around the city; all come to this alcohol and drug-free, drop-in community center in the heart of downtown. They meet, talk and socialize as they continue recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The Club is open 365 days a year, 15 hours a day, and offers nearly 30 distinct, recovery meetings each week. It is a safe and sober environment; a place to enjoy the support of others in recovery, to attend picnics, dances and barbecues, and to enjoy traditional holiday meals. It is the only public service facility of its kind in our city.

Santa Barbara is well-served by non-profit agencies in the fields of alcohol and drug addiction. While the Alano Club is an independent organization, it works in close and active cooperation with agencies, such as the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Project Recovery, Zona Seca, Cottage Residential Center, Bethel House, Rescue Mission, Daniel Bryant Center, Casa Serena, and the Newhouse, Mission House, Salvation Army, Transition House and Lighthouse residencies. After attending short-term treatment programs, the Alano Club is a central resource helping graduates maintain a lifetime of sobriety. The Club often refers transients, persons newly released from jail and homeless drop-ins to these residential facilities.

The Club’s successes are many: it is a partner with the probation department and the drug courts in fostering long-term abstinence; it is the city’s only facility educating licensed social workers about sustained recovery; it supervises the community service projects of drunk drivers and drug offenders. The Club is unique because it offers12-step meetings on the premise to these community service workers.

Won't you help us bring new growth to the strong roots we have put down? Please be as generous as you can. Your gift will make a difference. Together we can make the Alano Club a sustained and permanent place for recovery in Santa Barbara.

About the Campaign

Because of the generous help of Eugene Reish, the original owner of the Alano Club parcel, it was possible to buy the building at a very attractive price in 2003. The important role the Club plays in the life of the community (not just those in recovery) has inspired the support of others. It still takes an extraordinary commitment to be financially self-sufficient, keeping the doors open 365 days a year.

While many beautiful things happen inside the Alano Club, the premises are aging and in need of repair. Formerly the home of the Garden Street Theatre, the building is itself in need of recovery. And so, for the first time, the club is turning to the public by implementing a capital campaign to support the renovation project.

Strategic Objectives:
Facilities Improvement and Sustainability

General Capital Improvements....$500,000

Our Strong Roots…New Growth Campaign will provide resources to take the building renovation plan from drawing board to reality. To make the most of our recently purchased property, a structured and well designed plan includes acoustical corrections, general improvements for comfort and safety, landscaping, and restoration of the building to its original condition. With community support, a safe, attractive, and well maintained building for healing and recovery at the corner of Garden and Cota Streets will become a reality.

Mortgage Debt Reduction....$500,000

$500,000 will be used to pay down the mortgage of the building to secure the continuation of meeting space for those who will come through the doors in future years.

Endowment for Building Care....$500,000

The Endowment fund will be comprised of funds from the Capital Campaign, remaining after paying down the mortgage and providing necessary renovations. These monies will be invested at low risk to provide operating income to keep the Club financially sound and in good repair in future years.
